If Jutoh seems slow or appears to hang occasionally, there are settings and habits that you can change to speed things up. Here are some tips for increasing performance:
ensure your book is split into sections and not being edited as one large section;
periodically close document tabs by right-clicking over a tab and choosing Close Other Tabs or set the Maximum number of open tabs option to a smaller number in Preferences/Advanced;
ensure Text Highlighting mode is switched on only when necessary (View | Text Highlighting);
if Jutoh is taking a long time to build an index or table of contents at the start of compiling, consider switching off automatic index and/or table of contents building in Project Properties/Indexes if they are currently switched on;
if you don't have fields or headings that need to be updated every time the project is compiled, clear the option Automatically update fields and headings in Project Properties/Fields & Numbering;
reduce the amount of ad hoc character formatting in your project, for example using the Formatting Cleanup dialog ( Format | Book | Formatting Cleanup);
turn off View | Preview Floating Objects;
check whether your cover image and other images are huge - if they are more than, say, 1500 pixels wide you might consider using smaller images;
if you have a lot of images, turn on Load images on demand in Preferences/Advanced;
if you are mostly editing the text in a book, turn off Enable images in Preferences/Advanced so that Jutoh doesn't have to load and rescale images;
try switching off auto-save in Preferences/Projects (but be extra vigilant about backing up);
if it's taking a long time to open a large project, switch off Create backup when file is opened Preferences/Projects (but again, be vigilant about backing up);
if bandwidth when exchanging or saving files is an issue, for example on a slow network, compress your project via the option Compress project in Project Properties/Options;
check whether the number of styles is very large - this can slow down performance, and in older versions Jutoh could create a large number of styles after import from HTML, so reimporting with the latest Jutoh version may help;
try closing other applications and browser tabs that you're not using;
ensure you have at least 3GB of RAM in your computer (Jutoh will run on systems with less but very large projects could cause a slowdown);
use Book | Preview Section (Alt+/) to preview changes instead of compiling the whole book;
if EpubCheck is taking a long time to start, you may find performance increases after cleaning up your hard disk, for example by using the Windows application CCleaner to remove redundant temporary files; defragmenting may also help;
if your project is large and/or complex and is taking a long time to compile, restart your computer - especially on Windows, memory can become fragmented and reduce performance considerably;
if your project is extremely large and Jutoh is exhausting its addressable RAM, use the 64-bit version on Windows, Linux or Mac. You will need to be running a 64-bit operating system.
You can also check how many resources Jutoh is using via the Task Manager or equivalent system performance tool. If Jutoh is using more than 200-300MB of RAM you should review the above tips, especially on-demand image loading.
