KB0437: Should I use Epub or Mobi files for Kindle?

In the past, you would use .mobi files for previewing and uploading your books destined for the Kindle store. This still works perfectly, but now Amazon recommends that you use .epub, and has even started nagging you about it in Kindle Previewer 3 - even though the .mobi file works perfectly.

You may still want to generate .mobi files for:

  1. reading your book in Kindle for PC/Mac;

  2. sideloading to a Kindle device;

  3. uploading to a distributor that requires .mobi files;

  4. uploading to your own web site;

  5. checking that Jutoh has generated a correct Kindle file (very occasionally Kindlegen might find a problem that Jutoh didn't report).

So, if you want both .mobi files and Kindle-compatible .epub files, simply edit your Kindle configuration and check the Generate Epub option. Then you can launch the .epub file in Kindle Previewer 3 to stop it complaining, and upload the .epub to KDP. Just try not to confuse the Kindle-optimized file (default suffix _Kindle.epub) with the 'real' Epub file created by a different configuration (default suffix _Epub.epub).

If you don't need .mobi files, you can tell Jutoh to avoid the Kindlegen (Epub-to-Mobi) step by going to Preferences/Helpers, and setting the option Kindle file generation method to None (Kindle-optimized Epub only).
