KB0153: Why does Jutoh warn about no guide types in a fixed layout book?

Some distributors (in particular Apple Books) may reject your fixed layout book if there are no guide types. When there are no guide types, the landmarks section in an Epub 3 file will be omitted, and a missing landmarks section can cause rejection. Jutoh will warn if there are no guide types when compiling an Epub 3 file.

Some distributors, such as Feiyr.com, require the "bodymatter" guide type for the start of the main part of the book - for example, Chapter 1 - or the book will be rejected. Jutoh will warn about this too. To fix it, edit the document properties and set the Guide type to "text" or "bodymatter" (either will work).

You might set the guide types "toc" (table of contents), "text" (start of the main text), and "title" (for the title page). Others are listed in the Guide type drop-down menu. They are Epub 2 guide types, but will be translated to the Epub 3 equivalents when compiling for Epub 3.

There are several ways to edit the properties for a selected document:

  1. Right-click (or on Mac, control-click) on the page in the project outline, to the left of the Jutoh window, and click Properties. Or,

  2. use the menu command Document | Document Properties. Or,

  3. use the keyboard shortcut Shift+Alt+Enter.
