KB0155: Why do accents not appear on some ebook readers?

You may find that accents work on some platforms, such as Kindle for PC or Mac, but don't work on other platforms, such as the Kindle Paperwhite.

The problem may be that your content is using two or more characters per accented character, or in Unicode terminology the character is not precomposed. You can tell if this is the case by moving the cursor over the accented characters and deleting the character, which may take two or more steps if the character is not precomposed. Some readers cannot cope with precomposed characters, and the Jutoh editor does not always cope with it either, so it is better to use precomposed characters.

To do this, copy and paste the decomposed characters into the Find field in the Find and Replace dialog, and paste the precomposed equivalent character into the Replace field. Replace all instances in the book. Do this for all decomposed characters in the book, and compile your book again.

If this doesn't help, then perhaps the font in the ebook reader isn't capable of reproducing these characters, and you may need to find and embed a suitable font.

Or, the precomposed character may not exist in Unicode at all, for example x-bar (x-macron). If ereaders don't support the separate letter plus diacritical mark, then you might consider using a small image for the symbol. Give the image a name to stop the images being duplicated in the ebook file.

If importing from Word, note that a symbol such as x-bar inserted into Word as opposed to copied and pasted, may be inserted as a math equation which Jutoh does not support. This may be indicated by a warning on import that m:oMath is not supported. In this case, try pasting the character into Word (or Jutoh) from another application such as a web browser.

A user has reported a problem with some Croation characters using the 64-bit (Cocoa) version of Jutoh on Mac that is fixed by using the 32-bit (Carbon) version of Jutoh.
