KB0327: Why does a German start quotation mark used for drop caps cause a page break in Kindle Previewer 3?

If you use a start quotation mark of the form '„' (called Gänsefüßchen or "goose feet") and apply Drop Caps to the paragraph, then it can cause an overflow when viewed in Kindle Previewer 3 (not Kindle Previewer 2, or Kindle for PC) that creates a page break.

To fix this, edit the paragraph style (you may need to create a special one for paragraphs with these quotation marks) and in Drop Caps, click Insert Defaults under Custom CSS properties. This shows all the CSS properties that Jutoh will insert, with variables instead of the actual values. Jutoh will replace the variables when the ebook file is created. Remove the text:

margin-top: $MARGIN-TOP$;

and click OK. The drop caps should now display without breaking the page, though the effect is not altogether pleasing since the quotation mark is placed quite low.

Note that KP3 seems to be OK with the goose foot quotation mark if you set the number of characters to 2 in the Drop Caps tab - it also looks a bit better generally to have the first letter of the sentence in drop caps, and not just the opening quotation mark.

Or, consider using »Guillemets« instead, which doesn't trigger the page break.
