If you edit a table's properties, you may observe in the About field that the number of rows or columns is greater than the visible number of rows and columns. The table properties dialog will tell you if whole rows or columns are hidden. The Inspector will also tell you the actual number of rows and columns, in Tables mode.
This means that cells for a whole row or column have a 'span' that hides cells in other rows or columns. Normally you will merge cells using the menubar command Format | Table | Merge Cells (or the same command on the context menu). Merging two cells means that one of the cells (with the lower row or column number) takes on a row or column span of 2 - that is, it takes up the space of 2 cells, hiding the second cell. Later, you can use Split Cells to remove the span, if Jutoh detects that the selected cells have been merged.
If all of the cells in a row or column have spans that make the next row or column hidden, this effectively leads to hidden - redundant - rows or columns. This could happen when editing, without being aware of it, either in Jutoh or another word processor. There are several ways to deal with hidden rows or columns:
Ignore them. Jutoh won't write redundant rows and columns when generating an ebook. Or:
For each table, select a merged row or column and use Split Cells. Then delete the redundant rows or columns. Or:
Use the menu command Format | Book | Formatting Cleanup, and find and enable the Clean up tables option. This option will remove redundant rows and columns throughout the project.
To find out the spanning information for an individual table cell, select the cell with the mouse - you may find it easier to select a couple of cells, then restrict it to one cell. The whole cell background should now be highlighted. Show the table properties dialog, and if that cell has spans, they will be reported in the About field. A span of 2 means the cell will take up 2 cells; a span of 3 means the cell takes up 3 cells, etc.
