KB0430: Why do spurious lines show in images in my Kindle book?

In rare circumstances, Kindle devices may show unwanted artefacts such as a vertical line on an edge of an image.

This can happen if you have very large images in your book; the book viewer has to work extra hard to render the image on-screen, and this can cause a reduction in quality and possibly artefacts along edges.

Also, ensure images aren't being converted to JPEG twice: once by Jutoh, and again by Kindlegen. Kindlegen always converts images to JPEG, even if they are already in JPEG format, and this causes a loss of quality.

To fix these issues, edit your configuration (click Edit next to the "Kindle" or "Mobipocket" configuration selection in the Jutoh Control Panel) and change these two options:

  1. Maximum image width: enter a maximum pixel width such as 800, so that Jutoh resizes large images in your book to a sensible size when compiling.

  2. Convert images to JPEG: set to None, because Kindlegen will resample the JPEG to its own even more compressed JPEG. This will remove one step, so reducing the potential introduction of noise.
