KB0114: Do I really need two covers when submitting a Kindle book?

A Kindle book (that is, a .mobi file) normally has a cover embedded in it, and Jutoh helps you do this with the cover designer. For a .mobi file, this has to be a relatively low-resolution image or Kindlegen will complain.

However, when you submit your ebook to Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), it will ask you to separately submit a high-resolution cover image. So, do you need the original cover to be in the .mobi file at all?

Strictly speaking, no, you don't, because Amazon will replace the cover in the .mobi file with your higher-resolution image. So if you wish, you can leave the cover out of your .mobi file by changing the configuration option value Cover design to "(none)" and compiling again. You will get a warning from Jutoh, and also from Kindlegen, that no cover was specified.

In practice, you may well want to leave the embedded cover in so that it previews more realistically in Kindle Previewer and Kindle for PC/Mac, and if exchanging with other people or uploading to your own Kindle device.
