KB0113: Why do special 'dingbat' symbols not show on some ereaders?

You may find that some special symbols such as musical notes, fractions, feet and inches symbols, dingbats, and so on show as little boxes in the ereader.

This will be because the fonts used in some ereaders don't have the symbols. Fonts differ considerably in what symbols they support.

There are several possible solutions. You can find a free font that contains the required symbols and embed it (see "Embedding fonts" in Advanced Topics in the Jutoh book). Or, simply create little pictures of the symbols and replace the characters with pictures. The latter is much easier and won't increase the file size as much as embedding a font. For fractions, you could use plain text instead of symbols, for example 1/5.

If you are seeing {MISSING SYMBOL} text in Jutoh after importing from Word, this is because Jutoh detects the use of Symbol, Wingdings or other dingbat fonts and tries to map the symbol to a Unicode symbol that has a chance of showing in an ebook. If it can't do this translation, it gives up, and you should try inserting a Unicode symbol by pasting from a web page or using Format | Insert | Symbols | Symbol, using a standard font and not a special symbol font. If you find a symbol that works in Jutoh but not in the ebook, you may then need to embed a font with a better symbol implementation (such as the free DejaVu Sans) or use an image or alternate approach.
