KB0361: Why do paragraph styles include direct character formatting?

Why do italics not show up in my ebooks?

If you have imported content from an ODT file, and some of your paragraphs have been directly formatted with character attributes such as font size, italics and bold, for the entire paragraph, you may see styles such as "Normal + Italic" in the style palette.

Unlike most word processors, LibreOffice and OpenOffice can create styles like this when you have applied direct character formatting to the whole paragraph, at some point when editing. It's inconsistent, though, because the order of formatting determines whether the character formatting will be transferred to the paragraph style. For example: if you directly format a whole paragraph in italics, and then remove italics for a single character, the paragraph style will remain "Normal + Italic", with the single character formatted with a "Current + No Italic" character style. If you only format part of the paragraph with italics in the first place, then the paragraph style will not get the automatic formatting.

One disadvantage of this behaviour is that when you come to apply different paragraph styles in Jutoh, the character formatting will be removed also. So from Jutoh 2.85, this direct character formatting is put back into the text spans and removed from the paragraph style name. You can also fix an existing project by using Formatting Cleanup on the Format | Book menu, and checking Remove direct character formatting from paragraph styles.

If you prefer to keep the original import behaviour, you can go to the preferences dialog, and in the Import page, clear Remove direct character formatting from paragraph styles.
