KB0364: Why does the 'chapter' field show the wrong text in my ODT file?

If you are using the 'chapter' object (field) in a header within a page style, you may be seeing the wrong text instead of the chapter title.

This means that your document outline does not reflect your headings, and/or other styles have outline level set when they shouldn't.

To fix this:

  1. In Project Properties/Fields & Numbering, click Edit Document Outline Style. Ensure that for level 1, the Paragraph style field is set to the heading style you use for chapter headings, such as Heading 1.

  2. Edit the paragraph style you use for chapter headings, such as "Heading 1", and check that Outline level is set to 1.

  3. Check that other paragraph styles do not have their outline level set to 1 - they should normally be set to (none). Don't forget to check the parent styles which may contain an outline level that is inherited. For example, "Body Text" might be based on "Normal".

  4. If you are still seeing the wrong text, make a copy of the text that is showing instead of the chapter title, and search your project for it. The style for the paragraph you find is at fault, and has an erroneous outline level.
