KB0426: Where do default fonts and other default formatting come from?

See also: Why is some formatting not as expected in the generated ODT file?

You may find that fonts and other formatting appear in the Jutoh editor and output books even though it doesn't appear to be defined in your styles.

Some formatting may be defined in styles that are the parents of other styles: for example, styles often inherit from the "Normal" style - this will be mentioned in the description for each style in the Styles tab of the Formatting Palette. So, check whether there is a base style that contains the formatting you're seeing.

Default formatting can be defined in your style sheet, inherited by all other paragraph styles unless overridden in your styles. To view and edit this, click Edit on the toolbar and then click Styles in the Project Properties dialog. Then, click on the edit properties icon to view the properties of the currently selected style sheet.

Next to Default formatting, click Set to define formatting, and Clear to clear the formatting.

When you import from Word or ODT, this default formatting will be set, so that you can easily change basic formatting rather than setting it for each paragraph style.

You can change this behaviour in Preferences/Import, by checking Apply document defaults to paragraph styles. This will cause the document defaults to be applied to all styles in an imported document.

If default formatting is not explicitly defined in the style sheet, Jutoh will try to find either "Standard" or "Normal" paragraph styles in the current style sheet, and use these for the document defaults instead.

When editing an exported ODT file in LibreOffice, you can change the default fonts (assuming they are not overridden by specific styles) via the LibreOffice command Tools | Options. Select the item LibreOffice Writer > Basic Fonts (Western), and select your preferred font for various categories here.
